  • School Mascot: Tiger
  • Situated in Dyker Beach, a scenic part of Brooklyn close to the Verrazano Bridge, PS/IS 229K is a large school with an intimate, small school charm. Our teachers and staff get to know the children well, both as students and as people. Our student population is comprised of 61% children of Asian descent, 19% White, 17% Latino, and 2% Black. There are a number of native languages spoken at home and in the community, with the most prevalent being Chinese (Mandarin and/or Cantonese), Spanish, Arabic, and Russian.
  • We have realized that performance plus continued growth is what equals true success. Knowing that 21st century skills are not an option but a necessity in todays' global economy and ever-changing world, we continue to update and adjust. Technology certainly plays a large role. We continue to move towards one-to-one computing, with the new devices that are now in our students' hands. In 2025-2026, every student in GradesK-2 will have their own iPad and every students in Grades 3-8 will have their own Chromebook. The school library is complete. It has been upgraded to better support our burgeoning Digital Media and Journalism program. Included is a brand-new studio space for audio/video recording and editing, along with a pod-casting room. Needing to ensure safe opportunities for active learning and participation online, we have added Go Guardian and Pear Deck to our Google Classrooms. We continue to utilize IXL, which through real-time diagnostic assessment provides personalized online learning for students. Combined with i-Ready's online assessment and instruction suite, this provides teachers with the data and aligned resources they need to help all students grow and succeed in reading and mathematics.
  • The school now has three dedicated STEAM teachers, who work with classes through project-based learning focusing on Science-Technology-Engineering-Arts-Mathematics. Understanding that for students to truly excel academically and grow as individuals, social-emotional development is supported as well, our devoted guidance counselors facilitate "Respect for All" groups, where students work together to maintain a positive social environment. We have a dedicated, motivated Math Olympiad team made up of third grade to fifth grade students. They took great pride in achieving first place in individual and group contests at the District 20 Competition. A Calming Center on the third floor, is accessible to assist students and staff in maintaining a positive learning environment. Our Math Coach has implemented a Math Tutoring Program that continues to expand, where 4th and 5th grade students visit first through second grade classrooms to assist struggling students with math concepts. We have a "Mindful Monitor" program, where Middle School Students assist Elementary Teachers in their classrooms during the students' lunch periods.
  • With an over 15-year partnership with community-based organization, the Neighborhood Improvement Association (NIA), we continue to be able to provide a seamless day from approximately 8:00 AM 6:00 PM. Being able to provide supplemental learning and recreational activities after school, during the summer, and even during vacations, has helped us achieve PS/IS 229K feeling like home for our students and our community.
  • PS/IS 229K continues to provide an academically rigorous education, while at the same time offering diverse opportunities for acceleration and enrichment. For the 2025-26 school year, we once again had an over 95% pass rate for the Algebra I Regents and for the Biology Regents. Grade 8 students at PS/IS 229K also have the opportunity to earn foreign language credit, taking the Spanish Proficiency Exam. Most recently, over 30% of our grade eight students received offers for Specialized High Schools or to competitive specialized programs at other top high schools, including Stuyvesant, LaGuardia, and Goldstein. We are further enhancing our offerings in accelerated coursework by adding the U.S. History sequence in grades 7-8 this year, culminating with the U.S. History Regents in 2026.
  • In addition to the opportunity for high school credit through Regents-level coursework in mathematics and science, students have top-notch instruction in ELA, social studies, and the arts, which also serves as a springboard for specialized high schools and college preparation. We continue to offer additional electives including Civics, Pre-Med and STEAM. For the upcoming 2025-26 school year and beyond, we are continuing to develop a 21st century Digital Media and Journalism program. Our library has undergone a tremendous upgrade, turning the space into a true multi-media center to include 3-D printing, digital editing room, and podcast studio.Partnering with both PBS News Hour's Student Reporting Labs and Story Maker, along with local colleges/universities, our staff and students will be more than able to raise their voices and be heard on a variety of topics and issues. Our students and staff have launched the Tiger New Network (TNN), broadcasting on school-related topics, along with current community and world issues.
  • Our school continues to have a strong community service focus, with staff, students, and families alike, giving back. We recently donated over 140 pounds of canned and packaged foods through our "Souper Bowl" drive. We participated in the St. Jude Children's Hospital Math-a-Thon for the past three years, raising over $44,000 in donations. Our first year, we had an established goal of raising $4,000. The amazing students, families, and staff exceeded that goal five times over, by raising just over $20,000!!! The next year, our goal was $5,000. We exceeded that goal by raising another $14,000!!! This past year, our goal was $5,000. We raised $10,000!
  • We are renewing our partnership with Junior Achievement NYC to provide financial literacy support to our students in the upper grades. Our former two-period/week Enrichment Groups are being reconfigured to an after-school model to include for example: chess, Pre-Med, SHSAT Prep, Sports (basketball, soccer, volleyball), and Community Helpers. We will have a continued partnership with the Sanitation Foundation's Youth Education Team. Our staff and students completed the Climate Action Challenge, and our school was awarded $2,500 for a future sustainability project. We used these funds and an additional grant to partner with the NY Horticultural Society and collaboratively planted a school garden. This continuing partnership also provides education on nutrition and healthy living.
  • Our students and staff are also proud to take part in a number of District 20 initiatives that also shine a light on their many talents. These include the district STEAM Expo, in which all of our third grade through eighth grade students develop a project by going through the engineering and design process. We have had a group of students meet and exceed the challenge of participating in the MOEMS' Math Olympiad. With the Project Soapbox introduced in grades one, four, and eight, we will be expanding participation to all grades. Students engage in a multi-step process to identify and research an issue of interest, with the goal of developing a short speech to motivate the community to act for change.
  • Theater is returning this year, with students and staff preparing to present a theatrical performance of Newsies, the musical.
